Reviews:

Bruz: The first sip tastes like prunes, terrible flavor, reminds me of other terrible malt liquor 40s like the old Magnum formula & OE HG800. Middle is much like the beginning. And so is the swill. The only thing that could help this brew get a better review would be me smashing it over your face. But since I can't reach you, this gets 2/10 swills (not 1 because I can think of worse stuff on the market). At least I drank this while watching the old Sugar Ray Leonard vs Thomas Hearns fights, so my evening wasn't completely miserable. Thanks to ImissMy64oz & 662 for these!

11/22/09 havinafett: Thanks to RustythePelican for both the small and the WM of this bottle.
I drank the small months ago but really didn't get a sense of the general feel of this 40.

Stuck this one in the freezer for a good while.
First impression, not very good, but not terrible.
Smells like funky fruit soaking in alcohol.
Probably not an HG I'd drink regularly if it were available to me.

The taste is definitely growing on me though.
This bottle is so great looking.
Definitely one that looks better as a wide.
Goes down pretty good as a wide too.
I know rusty bought a case of this so I guess the bottle wasn't sitting in a cooler, the label is fucking pristine.

Still growing on me.

This is really not as bad as I thought, I'm drinking this incredibly slow but the alcohol bite is not growing with the warming of the booze at all.

Its going on an hour an a half and Im still drinking this.
Still holding its carbonation/taste/flavor.
Not great by by any means.
Ides is a far tastier and superior 8.2% brew, but this is ok.

Got a perfect starting buzz from this.
Mild HG buzz.

I'm giving this a 7/10.

Thanks again to Rusty.

10/11/09 d07c0m: Thanks to Rusty for this.

I'm so used to HGs these days that this dirty underground brew does not phase me at all.

It tastes pretty fresh, harsh metallic style but I like it.

Brewed by "Drink Beer LLC, La Crosse, WI"

Cool

Buzzes nicely at 8.2%

Right at the bottom of the label it says, "40 Ounces"

Under that it says, "One Quart, 8 Fluid Ounces"

Under that, "473 milliliters"

Uhh.... this bottle is not 16 ounces, it's 40 ounces.

7/5/09 beam21: Lucky 7-11 yum yum yum. I've had this shit once before in a 24 but this is the 1st 40, I remember it being ok and liken it to silver 211 probably because it's an obvious ripp off of it... 1st impression: it's bad. It's very drinkable and mild as HGs go, but the flavor is cheap and nearly maltless. It tastes nothing like silver 211 but the quality of the taste is about the same. Hard to speak on the buzz cause I had one already coming in. It's an 8.2 HG, I'm sure it's fine. Along the same lines, I suspect the swill will be pretty bad. Some nights I'd drink it over silver 211, some I wouldn't. It's not miserable. 7.5/10 Taste C+ Buzz B.

6/25/09 SouthLyon40s: Lucky Number 7 11

I really don't know much going into this. Read some reviews and they weren't great, but it doesn't look like I'm getting into anything too bad on this Wednesday night. Got this one from Rusty the Pelican, and he told me that he really didn't find it too bad, which is reassuring. I've been kind of sick (summer cold's suck) these last couple of days, so I've had this guy chillin in the fridge for more than a week... waiting for the perfect time.

Which is tonight. Solid crack and hiss and all of that. First taste is... not good. Not abysmal. Nothing I cannot handle... but not that great either.

However. I'm not losing hope. HG malts (at least for me) tend to fluctuate in an "opposite" type way taste wise to regular malts. Normal high 5% ones will usually start off as tasting fresh and thirst-quenching and end up kinda weak and stale and swillish. HG's usually start off with a wild bite that at first doesn't sink in too well, but once the taste settles in it flows down good and it. But the by the swill, all 40s are usually back to warm flat grossness.

Yea OK I guess that made sense.
And it's already mellowing out on me. At the label as we speak (type)

[Edit to talk about taste more] This one often gets the bad rap taste-wise. It's got a hint of the Camo HG alcohol-wine sweetness, but nowhere as bad, and it kinda goes away as you get used to it. Take away the alcoholic bite, and you're left with a somewhat sweeter malt than most.

And now working past it. It's gotten a little bit better, and at least it hasn't gotten that worse. I'm taking my time with this last portion and I don't know if that's such a good idea. But this also isn't really that bad by now. HG buzz is settling in nicely. Not St. Ides style buzz but comparable with the buzz I got from a Hurricane High Gravity (Silver Label) I had a couple nights ago.

Swill's not good. But this is Lucky Lager number 7-11. 1.79 on the price sticker. Wasn't exactly expecting something wonderful. And it's not terrible. Kind of a "regional" mid-west 40. But not available in Michigan. Seems like an Indiana exclusive. I don't generally like HG's, so this is mostly just for the collection. Thanks again to RustythePelican for the hookup.

9/2/08 doublej708: my first experience with the lucky number

i havent had an HG in a pretty long time so i was expecting the worst

but, it wasnt too bad. it was ice cold, so i pounded the first few big rips, it tasted sweet for some reason

that might have primed me up a bit, because i powered through the whole thing rather easily

i was making some terrible beer faces though during the warming swill

the buzz is a little weak, a 211 pack more punch

id say a 6 out of 10 for buzz, and a 5 out of 10 for flavor

7/22/08 HighGravity: Don't be steered away from negative reveiews - this is righteous brew in 40 oz. form ...
Fruity good ... malt sweetness(a very good thing) is ever-present ... these are the kind of beers/40'z that females like and get 'freaky' to ...
Don't fear the reaper ...

9 / 10 overall

good stuff

Buzzcore: Mad ups to Satan165 on the hookup of this rare and desirable 40! Now, onto the review: I'll admit I was a lil' scared to try this stuff, due to Bruz review............. but wow, it wasn't too bad. It tasted a lot like Camo Silver Ice, but with less carbonation. It really didn't taste too bad, but it left a weird fruity flavor in my mouth for the rest of the night, even after finishing a giant bag of Herr's "Smokey BBQ" potato chips, which are excellent. 6/10 because at 8.2% it gets the job done. I've since seen cases of 16 oz tallboys for like $10 a case, so at that price, I'll be drinkin' this stuff again, for sure!

DC40s: First of all, thanks to Satan for the hookup.

This is an interesting HG. Unlike others who have reviewed it, I have no problem with the taste. At all. When I took the first sip, it remained me--I'm not sure why--of Natty Ice.

Also, I drink HG 40s all the time. I like a lot of kick when I drink a 40.

I'm about halfway finished now, and I do feel a bit of a buzz coming on. Unfortunately, just like with my Hurricane Ice review, I have not eaten anything today, so the buzz might end up being stronger than it would be otherwise.

Ok, I'm just finishing up now. The buzz factor is fairly strong--especially with my empty stomach--but still entirely manageable. I could certainly still operate heavy machinery.

If I could get this near me I'd drink it regularly.

devnull: the crack was hard, the hiss was puny.

first sip was fucking terrible, for a 8% HG... tasted more like evil eye (10%) or rock/axe head (11%)... fruity and nasty.

like evil eye, it's lacking in aftertaste. i'm gunna hafta agree with some other reviews; getting to the top of the label was nasty. i've had much tastier brews.

half gone, a bit of a buzz is creeping up, but it doesn't taste any better. this disappoints; usually, even with the nastiest high grav malts, once you get half of it down, the buzz is strong enough to make it taste "better". not today.

slugging it down as fast as tolerable, but it's not growing tastier. i was more impressed by the natty ice that i drank last night... which was terrible.

bottom. same as the top. mediocre HG malt.

i'll give it 4 of 10 swills, because i'd rather have drank (yet another) st ides, which i don't even like all that much.

THE MATH:

8.2% X 40oz = 3.28oz of pure alcohol.

=229.6 mL of 80 proof booze... a shot more than a 200mL "half pint"

=5.46 12oz 5% ABV beers.

Dukesplace: Picked up this HGL from a trade. The bottom had a little sludge, but not too much sediment. We were at the beach house mid week, it was tues night nothing going on. We notice outside the back window, the house behind us is having a party. 4 kegs, mad peoples. So we decided to go see whats up I take my 7-11. we roll in and there are tons of people, girls like crazy. we walk in and these dudes are like " who the fuck are you?" "we say "its all good bro were the neighbors". The guy who rented the house was stoked to have us there, gave us keg cups, offered us shots. people were really nice and all. Then I got us kicked out for talking smack to some stuck up bitch. Anyway it was still a good time and I finished my 7-11 in no time Defintly better then camo, but not quite as good as a steel silver.. got me drunk and rowdy! 7-out of 10... with 2 bouns swills for getting us kicked out of a great party.

FultonCounty40z: Got this in from a friend visiting family in Indianapolis (markblackout helped me locate it). I'll agree with DC...a unique HG 40. There was no harsh alcohol taste. I expected a camo-like brew, but not in the least...it went down smooth, even though I drank at a very chill pace, and it was pretty warm at the end. The buzz set in really slow, and hit full force after a couple of follow-up natty lights.

In summary, a suprisingly good tasting, high % 40 with a badass bottle.

MarkBlackout: got this today, upon returning to central indiana. was hesitant to buy considering others' reviews, and the 8.2 ABV.. i was actually pleasantly surprised. this malt was not bad at all, really, especially compared to other high gravity brews. i didn't drink this too fast, just enjoyed it over the course of an episode of iron chef. tangy, malty taste but drank it down to the glass with no problem at all. 8 1/2 out of 10 swills.. no need to pass this one up.

satan165: just cracked it
not as bad as i thought it would be
i dont like HGs anymore
this is ok for what it is this tastes of course similar to a silver 211, as clearly they are trying to rip that off in any and every way possible. slightly watered down version maybe? the taste isnt as distinct as the 211, this has more of the bad alcohol silver ice type of flavor then a 211 also. steel brewing uses better ingredients or a better brewing process to cover that up a little more, its in your face with this shit. HGs suck anyways, i dont like em. stick with ballantine.

White Mike: Yeah this stuff is weird. The first few sips did taste bad, just a kinda foul taste. The worst of a musty malt mixed with the sting of a HG. But as it went on it got better. As I swilled this 40 from about the top of the label to about were it ended, it was good. Nice malt taste, went down ok. But when I got to the bottom, it started tasting foul again. Strange 40, starts off bad, then gets better, then gets bad again.
