Bruz: This brew that I drank on 6/12/01 and which expired 9/16/98 tasted not bad at all! In fact, I could taste no difference between this aged brew & a fresh malt. Anywho, it tasted just fine, gave me an alright buzz, and went down quick being a wide mouth. Plus, it goes great with Oreo cookies! Rating: 8/10 swills |
2/1/11 Wasteoid: The first time I had this brew was in Buffalo, NY a couple years ago while at a friends' house in a part of town I can only describe as a bizarre ghetto. The local corner store sold this bottle for somewhere around $1.50, hazardously inexpensive for someone who drinks as much as I do. It's not the worst malt liquor I've ever had (hats off to the mighty Pit Bull), but it's nowhere near the best. While only 7%, it's got the garbage-like taste with a kill schwill that even the worst homeless alcoholic would be hesitant to drink. Do not let this shit get warm on you! |
10/25/09 beam21: This is a foul, pretty standard street malt. And this is a street malt to the extreme. Very strong flavor for a low abv%, very sharp. Reminded me of a canadian strong beer in that respect such as bull max. I was drunk somewhat when I got into it but I believe the buzz to be average or slightly better. Kind of a grimy 40, but intriguing. Taste B- Buzz B- Overall 7/10 |
6/14/09 havinafett: I know I can get this stuff in philly as I've drunkenly seen it when I go to buy more alcohol during a night, but I picked this one up for a cool $1.69 in Manahawkin, NJ. I can't get anything for that cheap most of the time. Great crack on this. Tasted pretty good I thought. Pretty basic but enjoyed it nonetheless. Halfway through I was sold on this stuff. I definitely need to scout out a shop to get this regularly. The taste stayed true all the way to the end and it delivered a good starting buzz for the night, even while munching the shit out of some Tostitos hint of jalapeno scoops. 8/10 |
6/8/09 sleazye: First off, thanks to Mr. Brezz for this bad boy. The his and pop were pretty loud, which was awesome. The taste sort of reminded me of a lesser Olde English 800. I liked the ghetto-ness of the label with the lightning bolt and the big logo. Coming in at 5.8% ABV, the taste was pretty decent and went down easy as hell.
Taste: 8.5/10 All in all, if you're strapped for cash and want an ok buzz, score this 40 if you can. |
5/25/09 BWill40s: Just swilled my first 40oz of Silver Thunder. This 40 was not bad at all it reminded me of Olde English east coast but a little more watered down. I am shocked that this 40 is so cheap. At the under $1.50 range I can't see how anyone can turn down some Thunders.
Swills I give this a 7.5 - 10 Swills it does remind me of that OE type style malt brew and the label is kickass. If any members or beer drinkers stumble across this drink it up. ![]() |

4/19/09 troobie: I hate doing a review from only having a malt once. My opinion changes over time and with experience. Nonetheless, I've never had this before and can't get it in my area so I'm going to do a review. Having trouble finding the ABV and it isn't listed on the bottle, but I'm thinking it is in the low range. I'll have to contact Pabst to find out. Cheapest looking cap I've ever seen. All aluminum except for the normal Miller stuff. I see other people like the label. For $1.59 it works. I would assume a 4th grader designed it during art class. I see they stylized the letters "V" and "D". Is this supposed to remind me to check for venereal diseases the next morning? Fresh until June so no worries about this being stale. This comes from the Stroh Brewery, which comes from Pabst, which comes from Miller, which comes from Miller-Coors, which comes from SAB-Miller and Molson-Coors (or so I think). This brew has an orange color, more orange than anything else I've seen. Label says it is going for a "smooth full flavor" so lets find out. I'm drinking this "fridge warm" so that I can get whatever taste it has to offer out of it. Lots of corn taste. This has an HG taste and smell to it, but a light one. Low on the carbonation which is a turnoff for me. Down to the label and I'm not feeling this at all. Really weak, Magnum weak. It does at least have a malt taste to it. Getting a little better as it warms up and it keeps tasting sweeter. Overall this is really poor. For a few cents more I could buy a Hurricane High Gravity and get unique taste, high ABV, and much better drinkability. Final thoughts: Corn and sugar. Weak buzz, weak label, weak taste. 3/10 because it is cheap. ![]() |

4/14/09 TheFear: Much better than I remember. Easy to drink, decent buzz, and cheap. That's 3 for 3 in my book. I last had Silver Thunder in the mid 90s. It was one of my regulars. I think it was $0.99 then. Needless to say, I've had many of these. This one I found in Kutztown, PA at the six pack shop next door to Kutztown Pub(they also had OE800,OEHG,Private Stock,Coqui 900, Colt45 Double Malt and Camo Silver Ice). The bottle looked the same as I remember it. The classic label kicks ass! The silver cap is a pretty classy touch as well. I did drink this in well under 10mins for a video. It tasted very good. The buzz kicked in shortly after the 10min chug. I'm definately goin back to K-town for more of these. The label reads, "Brewed with classic ingredients for a smooth full flavor." I can't argue with that. 7/10. |

2/19/09 BigJandthe40: Love those lightening bolts, just as much as I love those fat chicks on the late night. ![]() |

1/20/09 nickmoulton: I havnt ripped a silver thunder in about a year, but as I recall, it is quite tasty.
Halfway there, only 3 guzzles in, I cant emphasize the smoooooothness
I have decided to take it to the bathroom, I feel a rumble coming on.
So far, we are looking a 9/10, if this keeps up, I might have to give it a solid 10.
This is a close one, it held up all the way through. I love easy drinking malts, but this was almost as if It wasnt real |

10/02/08 JAP: First found this malt in 2007 at a local beer store in Delaware. Never seen this shit where I live in Salisbury md. so it was a surprise to find it in this little shit ass town where I use to work. Not a bad malt at a 1.70 a pop. Pretty smooth tasting malt over all. Not my fav. but a go to for something different from what i can get around my piece. I'll still by this shit every now and then. I give it about 6.5/10 swills. Needs more of a buzz factor, but taste is alright. |
40 Ounce Killa: Many thanks to Buzzcore for hooking me up with this! I really liked this 40. It gave a great hiss on opening, and the taste was consistent throughout. This malt is perfect if you just want to hang-out and swill a bit, without getting really fucked-up. It has a nice taste, but isn't strong enough to make you cringe before every sip. I'd compare this to Schlitz Blue Bull in more than one way. I would buy this on a regular basis if I could. Overall, 7 out of 10 swills for the Thunder. |
91firebird: Shout out to Dukesplace for the hookup on the Silver Thunder . Was supposed to have this a while back via Splatterhouse but he fucking shafted me out of a trade and he is nowhere to be found now. Anyways, this shit was ice cold when I cracked it. Great crack, full detatch. Shit smelled good. 1st pull was smooth. I didn't know what to expect with this so I took a big pull and was very surprised. Kinda like Country Club but I also tasted a little funkyness like a St Ides. I like both those malts so this shit is a winner in my book. One thing I did notice is that the label started to peel off rather easily, so I'll have to glue it back on with a glue stick. It's been argued that Silver Thunder is a low level malt and it is, but IMO I like low level malts and this is no exception. Overall 9/10 swills. Cool label, great taste and the swill was still cold when I finished it. Although I swilled this pretty quick so the buzz was decent. |
Alvin Karpis: First off a HUGE shout out to DukesPlace for the hookup on this most wanted 40 from Brooklyn. Crack and hiss were ok first sip was very smooth and had a good taste to it. Wow i was expecting some ghetto malt like Coqui but this tastes way better. At the half way point its still tasting great and I have a small head change. Just drank the swill and the taste stayed true all the way. I really liked this malt, and the kick ass label makes it that much better. For a non HG this is one of the best, mabet its because I was thinking about drinking this all day or mabey its because i have not been drinking alot latley and have been craving some malt. Taste 8/10 Buzz 6/10 Overall 7/10 If this was sold in redding it would be in my weekly rotation. Thanks Dukes ![]() |

Buzzcore: Wow, I've heard many people use Silver Thunder in comparisons to their worst malt experience, but this stuff was surprisingly good. Somewhere between Country Club and Private Stock, which are two of my faves. Smooth going down and even Zenn liked it, and he can be real picky about shizz sometimes. Halfway through the bottle, the taste changed ever so slightly, but nothing to be alarmed about...... just more of a malt taste, I guess? And at the very end, the swill got a little foamy and I had to let it sit for a minute, but it tasted just like the last half of the bottle. I drank it ICE cold, if that has anything to do with it, but all in all it was definitely a good brew. Got a lil' buzz workin from it too! Try it, if you can find it. For less than $2.00 for a 40oz'er, it gets a 6/10 and if it had more octane, it'd be in my top ten! |
dj oe 800: found this on a mini-hunt a few blocks from temple university main campus in philadelphia. very good. reminded me of olde e, but i find that there's a distinct bite to olde e that was understandably missing from silver thunder. went down pretty smooth, but i remember it foaming up a whole hell of a lot. yielded a decent enough buzz -- a "starter buzz," i call it. watched "snakes on a plane" with my buddies. the movie sucks. not even copious amounts of silver thunder could save it, although i don't know why we expected anything but suckitude from it. i also bought a country club, only drank one sip or so from it, left it at my buddy's apt, then finished it close to a month later, and it was still good -- carbonated, even. but, that's a different review altogether. |
dollazz: just cracked it, the crack was real crisp, and the first sip tasted really fuckin good, its cold, it was dusty as hell in the store but i wiped it off, ill update as i swill this thing. the more i drink this, the more it reminds me of the taste of OE, just not as malty, a little easier to put down. swill tastes just as good as the first sip, the aftertaste went away. this is a dope 40oz. although, no buzz at all... so 6/10 swills. |
Drastic Mezures: I think Silver Thunder is an all around average 40. It's kind of smooth but it also had a little bit of a fresh out of a can metallic taste. When I got 3/4 of the way down it got a serious ass-end that I couldn't finish so I poured some out for my friend Jessie. He didn't die but he got married so its almost like he's dead cause he'll never hang out again. I got a mild buzz off it but I think it was skunked so I should drink another one on a better day when I can finish it proper and give it another chance. |
FultonCounty40z: This is overall on the lower half of all the 40s i've had. Taste was rough from the beginning. tasted like a bad wildcat. slammed it anyway, good buzz, did the job. cool label. |
hg8point2: master of the cheap shit......... silverthunder is pretty damn good.i had my first one in a little shit hole town in pa. when the local liquor ran out of old gold.when my boy brought that shit back i was talkin' mad shit on st.but after i got half way done with my first one i realized this brew was actually good.it has a decent flavor and with the wide mouth version it's the definition of easy drinking.st's cool with me 6/10. |
iceman889: silver thunder tastes like fruit punch with ear wax in it |
ImissMy64oz: one of my favorites |
JoeWebberlione: Shots out to Dukesplace for the hookup on this one. A decent crack with a nice hiss to it. First sip reminded me of a watered down version of Black bull. It packs a decent buzz and the after flavor is rather nice. Its different than your run of the mill malt, alot different from Olde English or Colt 45. This malt is in its own class, something deffinately different. B for the label, B+ for the taste an A - for the buzz And a B- for the swill. Over all 8 out of 10 swills. |
LMSCRacer: Found this 40 in a liquor store in Mt. Vernon, IL. Drank it prior to heading out for a "working dinner" at a nice Italian restaurant in St. Louis. Got exactly what I expected - not much. Non-existant hiss off the crack. Very mild taste - easy to drink. Low carbonation level. Oddly, the taste didn't deteriorate as you approached the bottom. I iced it down in the hotel sink, so it never did get too warm anyway. Swill was still ok. I paid 1.49 for it and would do it again. Nothing special - 6/10 swills if only for the cool label. |
lookin 4 a 40: This malt and I have some history. Ive only seen this in some of the grimiest parts of town, stores near funston st had em in the cans back in 02, and it was HORRIBLE worst ever. They disappeared from the area and I thought i'd never see em again. Fast foward 6 years. We found them last week in Cairo GA at this liquor store in the hood. they had 15 packs of OE it was so ghetto. Bought a case of ST quarts, and I must say they taste exceptional. Flow smooth good taste and is bearable when they get a little warm. Far cry from the old days, cans must have been skunked. Tight label 7/10 |
MarkBlackout: smooth, good malt. anybody who likes 40s would enjoy swilling at least one of these. pretty weak, yet stormy label design. a stroh's production piece, this one rings true to tradition. get a dozen silver thunders if you can. storm system come correct. 7 out of 10 swills, easy. |
neufutur: I wonder how old Silver Thunder was by the time I got it from CountryClubMan. He found it easy enough in the store, and I assumed it was a "new" bottle. The skunkiness was enough to taste even after a 40 of Magnum, and the aftertaste was (no lie) burnt toast. I tried valiantly to finish the entire thing but it's currently chilling in my bag with about an inch of malt left in it. The buzz factor was pretty good; by about halfway through this 40 I was very relaxed and tired. The taste was horrid, but I'm sure if this one wasn't skunked it would have been a hell of a lot better. |
oldeenglisheddie: Had Silver Thunder for the first time last night, now I got some history behind me for hunting down this exceptionally well priced malt beverage. When I was 16 I was working at Sesame Place in Pennsylvania, me and my boy were just getting off work and we were brown bagging some 22's of Olde English, this grimy ass old black wino comes up to us, asks us if we're drinking malt. Of course, we respond. He inquiries as to what our malt of choice is. "Yo, the Tiger, son, Olde English" He then proceeds to call us a pair of "dumb ass cracker motherfuckers" (a phrase that to this day makes me smile like I'm retarded). We offer him a 22, even grab another brown bag from the car (yeah, we travelled with empty bags for such an occasion) hand him some gold, and we ask, "so, what's your malt of choice?" He looks at us and says "I drink Silver Thunder, the cheapest, and the bestest!" Well, needless to say, such a glowing endorsement could not go unignored. So, for 10 years now I've been looking for it, unsuccessfully, being told by local hootch purveyors everything from "we just don't carry that shit" to "didn't that make some bums go blind" to the simple "The don't make it anymore" I had thought I would never find it, but with such a mystique builty up around it, I had to find "da thunda" and last night runnin' out to the 40 store I found it, finally, I grabbed a 40, another 40 of Olde English (as a control, if I'm going to view it scientifically I need something to judge it against) as well as a 6 of Mickey's grenades (appetizers, yo). Got home, tore open the brown bag and started swilling, drinking half of the Silver Thunder.... the taste, like an Olde E that's been open for too long, but not bad, the buzz, about the same. Drank some Ol' E to cleanse the palate, then gave the Silver Thunder another shot, still tastes kinda shitty, but somehow better once it had been open a minute, it does go down smoove, guzzling the last 20ozs or so went quick in one gulp, and following that with the remainder of my Olde E left me with 5 grenades as my buzz was kicking hard. So overall, this dumbass cracker motherfucker says, hey, you short on cash? I grabbed mine for $1.65, a full 20 cents cheaper than the Olde E, that's less change out of the jar coming up on payday if yer desperate. |
pman433: silver thunder is decent shit i have no probs drinking it |
sippin apache: Thanks Racer for sending this. 40 bottle in itself looks real ghetto(random) with those lightening bolts on the label. Cracked weak and I was disappointed on the over all taste. I shall review this one again as it was an awesome add to the collection but the brew was not very carbonated and kinda cidery tasting. I swilled a couple 12oz local brews in between the actual 40 so cant put a judgement on this one this time. This is a tie. For now. |
