Bruz: On 1/18/09 I drove 2 hours north to just outside Poughkeepsie, NY, to meet up with nickmoulton who gave me this very rare & limited edition 40oz. I learned about Tap & Die while doing some research on obscure malt liquors online, and immediately dug up as much info about it as I could. Long story short, it was brewed for a limited time this previous spring, and only 50 cases were produced. It will be re-released the following May, with a bigger production. nickmoulton, living about a half hour away from the brewery, drove out to see if he could find one. Another long story short, they hooked him up with one of the $7.50 40s that they had saved in storage. And because he's awesome he gave it to me. It was a delicious malt liquor, and hit the spot even though I drank it in 10 minutes after a 2 hour drive while still feeling a little hungover. It was sweet and flowed down amazingly smooth for a beer weighing in at 7.5% ABV - I didn't taste a strong presence of alcohol at all! I wish more microbreweries would produce a malt liquor & bottle it in 40oz form. Granted, it wouldn't be a national success because charging $7 for a 40 no longer targets the typical 40oz market. But on a limited scale, there are those aficionados such as myself who would gobble these up & horde them. 40oz malt liquor, when made well, is a beautiful thing. nickmoulton & I drank this behind the Eveready Diner, before slobbing out on their Pile-Up appetizer sampler. The Eveready Diner was featured on The Food Network's "Diners Drive-Ins & Dives" and was rated the #1 diner in the nation 3 years in a row. Their Pile-Up appetizer pretty much sucked though, there was nothing special about it, and the onion rings had tons of onion skin in them. Anyway, after drinking the Tap & Die and eating Pile-Ups, we drove to Half Time, a liquor store boasting the world's largest selection of beer, where I spent over $50 on various craft brews! I rate this micro malt an easy 10/10 swills - I'd drink this again & again if I could. Plus the experience of the whole thing ruled.

5/14/10 91firebird: Tap and Die. Thanks to Sleazye for the hookup on this 40. The bottle is cool and its a very nice edition to my collection. But instead of writing a long drawn out review just read SouthLyons40 review and its exactly the same way I feel. Tastes like a watered down Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

Not a malt liquor

Not worth 7.50 a 40

Overall 2/10

12/13/09 40ozHawaii: Glad I had the opportunity to experience this 40. Unfortunately, as much as I enjoyed this beer, it is not a malt. I don't know why they label this as such when it clearly tastes lie a local micro-brew. Don't get me wrong- this beer has its place, but it doesn't taste much like a malt liquor to me. Nonetheless, I enjoyed drinking it. This beer has a plastic cap, and I did not get a solid crack, hiss or foaming sound from opening this. It appears that the carbonation is low, which indicate to me that they need to add more priming sugars to the bottle to enforce a stronger carbonation (yes-easier said then done).

Regardless, the taste was smooth and enjoyable from start-to-finish, which makes this easy for me to rate high. However, I do question where this falls in terms of traditional malt beverages on the 40oz market.

12/10/09 odeed: this is really the best malt liquor i have ever had. nice malty backbone with a slight wheat finish. good stuff indeed. taste 10/10 buzz 7/10 overall 9/10

11/28/09 SouthLyon40s: Looks like a lot of 10/10 reviews. I'm not blown away by a 40 with a "microbrew" taste. I like my 40s to taste like malt liquor. I like being able to pound them down relatively easily. I actually enjoy the "cheap" taste somehow.

So if anything this 40 already has strikes against it for according to reviews not tasting like a typical malt liquor.

Also it has strikes against it for being pretentious. Limited edition? Come on.

I guess the whole beer "culture" with palates and oak and hazelnut tastes and "hints of pumpkin and spice" and dudes taking sips of beer and making faces like they're at a wine tasting in Southern Tuscanny come off wrong to me. Keep scoffing at me as I drink Colt 45 while you sniff your beer detecting "flavours"

No offense.

Label gets a 1/10. I'm not interested in a history of your brewery. Boring. Shits going straight into 40 storage after this.

First few sips. Not malt liquor.

"No but just because it lacks the 'traditional' taste doesn't mean that it-"

No. It's a flat microbrewed beer.

"But it has the characteristic ingredients that go into-"

Well then they fucked it up because it doesn't taste like malt liquor.

How about I pour 3 Bells Oberons into a 40, let the carbination fizzle, throw a fucking Sprite cap on it, and market it as an "upscale" 40.

Stick to what you know, microbreweries. Don't patronize me with this shit. This is not 40 ounces of malt liquor.

11/9/09 40zForSatan: Thank you Sleazy E for hooking it up with this gem. I knew I was getting into something good from all of the reviews on here. I cracked this one open after an uneventful saturday night, kickin back with friends watching movies and eating hawaiian food. I treated this malt like a craft brew, wouldn't even think about drinking it out of the bottle. Like the other reviews it had very little to no carbonation, I would love to try it with carbonation but it wasn't necessary because the flavors in this were outstanding. This is a very bold drink, very full in flavor and very smooth. I would like get one of these and let it sit for a year since it still has active yeast in it, I think it would be even more amazing after some bottle conditioning.

9/15/09 havinafett: Huge thanks to boston40hunter for the Tap & Die.
Drank this while watching football on a Sunday afternoon.
Took a huge first pull on this thing and instantly knew that would probably be the biggest swig I'd take of it. This is definitely not something to down real quick. It's a good craft brew and thats obvious, doesn't really taste like malt liquor at all. Didn't really taste like a 7.5% to me either. Not bitey, smooth and full of flavor. Like others have said the lack of carbonation is pretty apparent as well. I like a decent amount of carbonation but in this case I felt it was a good thing. Usually I drink pretty quick, not intentionally, it just seems to happen and it took me an hour to finish this. I was liking it more and more as I drank it. It never seemed to lose that unique taste. Stuff was good to the last drop and I had a nice mild buzz when I was finally finished.

10/10 for all around greatness.

8/15/09 d07c0m: Fan-fucking-tastic.

A great-tasting micro-brew in the 40oz format. More breweries should do this. I never got any Dogfish Head ones, so I can't compare T&D to that.

I'm super glad to have this as it is unique and awesome.

The plastic cap is a nice change of pace and shows that this beer comes from a small brewery where everything is hand-made.

I love that about beer, when I look at this bottle I can really see where it came from and what went into it.

The label and the beer make me feel warm and fuzzy thinking (and drinking) about it.

In general it tastes like a very smooth, well-hopped micro. Not too complex but definitely significant in flavour.

Not a typical malt liquor in my opinion but a great beer which I would love to drink regularly.

My specimen wasn't very carbonated and even though I considered cellaring this for a maybe half a year I couldn't resist drinking it while it was fresh.

BIG, BIG, BIG thanks to novice member hajabooja for this one-time experience. Your Colt 45 wide-mouth will be mailed shortly.

A definite 10/10 for Tap & Die Malt Liquor and a big tip of the hat to the People's Pint in Greenfield, MA

7/7/09 sleazye: I was happy to finally get my hands on this awesome and apparently rare 40 that is the pride of my state Massachusetts. The crack was kind of so-so, considering the cap is made out of plastic. The hiss was so-so and the odor just reeks of classy microbrewery Malt Liquor. We ended up finding it in a mom & pop-style grocery store called Fosters Market just 3 minutes away from The Peoples Pint for nearly almost a dollar less that the usual $7.50 it goes at.

The taste was that of a pale ale which I really enjoyed a LOT with this high-class 40, coming in at 7.5% ABV. About halfway through the 40 at hand and already feeling the 7.5% kick that it has. One other thing to mention about this 40: it's not a 40 you want to do in 10 minutes. It's just too good of a 40 to swill in such a fast frame of time, because of all the flavors of the malt, yeast and thickness of it all. Anyone would be crazy to not want to savor the awesomeness that is Tap & Die.

If I were to have a mild complaint about this 40 is that this batch is real low on carbonation, which makes for a lack of belches. Aside from that, it's flawless.
Unlike most 40s, the swill is actually the best part of this microbrew 40.
This, perhaps, may be the perfect 40 in my opinion.

7/4/09 BWill40s: Tap and Die Malt Liquor. Well I am the 4th to review this rare gem. I got this yesterday along with sleazye. Our friend Chris, Shawn, Eric "Sleazye" and I. Chris wanted to go down and check out the peoples pint pub so all 3 of us said hey why not a chance to find the rare T&D'S.

Cool little place. Ripped the a 20oz glass of tap and die on draft. Was very sweet and spicey. After we left we hit up soem stores trying to find the T&D's. First place we go to is Dad's Liquors. It was up the street. No luck thought we did find HHG 40's and Busch Light 40's and St Ides special brews 22oz never seen those 3 anywhere until then. The lady thought we were all wasted when one of us was like wtf Ides special brews. They must be gone lol. Well none the less we got a couple HHG 40's and rolled out to the next place.

So Chris pulls up his GPS and finds this supermarket called Fosters Market. I am thinking there won't be no beers at this place. Well I was wrong we get in there and what do we find 5 T&D 40's. So we clean the last 5 out Sleazy got 2 of them. We went back to Shawn's house to rip them.

First sip tasted just like the pub on draft. It has that 7.5 kick it is very full thick full taste. as you would expect for a mircomalt. I get a pumpkin spice kind of taste with this that is just me though. and the buzz is great for the 7.5

Now giving this a rating Swills 10-10 easy Label 10-10 Very Unique Ineed.

My friend Chris hooked me up with his empty so i have an extra for trade whoever wants it. A cool day random at that but cool day to score this brew.

6/3/09 BigJandthe40: NickMoulton is my east coast brother, this guy has taken care of me since my first day on the 40oz fourm. Nick came through again and hooked it up with a most wanted Tap & Die. I just finished this, let me tell you about it. The cap has no ring and comes off with out a sound or hiss, I took a smell and it smelled like a high $ mirco. First taste was suprising, it reminded me off a Serria Nevada Pale Ale but alot smoother. I was suprised at how smooth this 40oz was, it did lack carbination like Nick said, I would have to agree with him if it had more bubbles it would have been alot better in my book. I really have nothing else to bitch about with this 40oz, I would buy it if it were down here, I wouldnt drink it too much but on holidays yes. I am going to give this a strong 8.5/10

5/8/09 nickmoulton: tap and die is good, real good
cracked one after a haul back from greenfield, was just under ideal temp
this isnt a 40 to rip with the quickness, it is a micro brew and a damn good one
7.5%
good buzz
my only complaint isthe carbonation level, i like heavy carbonation so that i can rip heavy burps
this brew makes me feel full, and then unable to burp which results in an uncomfortable setting

hit me up for this
