I first discovered that MillerCoors was toying with the idea of plastic 40oz bottles almost 4 years ago. Then they announced they were indeed going to do it as part of their Environmental Stewardship Program, and test marketed the product over one year ago. I already discussed all that here, last March.
Now it appears the time has come. I knew early 2014 was the intended time for this, but I still hoped that maybe something changed and after all that R&D they decided to just stick with glass.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t appear to be the case. YouTube malt liquor guzzler and competitive eater Tiny Tim Rauscheder recently noticed that Walmart.com was listing the plastic 40s for sale in their stores.
At the time of this writing, no one in the online malt liquor communities has actually seen the plastic 40s in stores yet, but the new “Shatter Proof” labels on these bottles (vs their test marketed counterparts) is proof enough that they’re coming… and soon!
The general consensus is that drinking 40s from plastic bottles just won’t be the same. Anheuser-Busch, Pabst (if they’re not forced to go plastic as well, since Miller bottles their brands), and City Brewing may see an increase in business. Or perhaps it’s just us hardcore malt liquor enthusiasts who care… maybe the majority of malt liquor drinkers won’t mind the change and will be able to get used to it.
Thankfully the glass 40oz bottle isn’t gone for good. But with the iconic OE800 now being in a plastic bottle, to some of us, they may as well be.
