There may be a new flavored malt hitting your favorite corner store’s shelves soon! RateBeer member and malt liquor fan jmagnus87 recently posted on their forums the following tidbit: “Just got word that we will be getting blackberry steel reserve in the warehouse in about a month.” A look at jmagnus87′s account to see if this was just a newbie/troll post of some sort shows instead an extensive and serious history to the hobby. I have a message out to him for more info (i.e., his sourcee!) and will update this post with any additional information. He’s in Rockford, IL, so anyone in and around the Chicago area be sure to keep your eyes peeled for this potential new product in the coming weeks!
Flavored malts are not uncharted territory for Steel Brewing Co. Years ago they released 211 Special Brew, in response to the relatively popular St. Ides Special Brew and the lesser known Olde English Special Reserve. Out of all the special reserved brews, this one was possibly the least successful and least well known.
What flavor “fruitmix” is exactly I have no idea. But I’m sure it was red. In which case you could probably just as easily call it “red flavor”. The logo appears to be that of a cherry bomb, so I’ll go out on a limb and assume the main red flavor was cherry.
I never had the (mis)fortune of drinking a 211 SB, but I already hope that the new Blackberry 211 tastes better. I tend to hate flavored malts of any kind, so I’m not exactly looking forward to drinking this, just adding it to my collection.
Stay tuned for more info if and when this becomes official!
UPDATE (7/10/13): jmagnus87 works for a Miller distributor and receives a report that lists new arrivals and upcoming products. This one listed “Steel Reserve Blackberry 24oz cans (new brand) to begin shipping next month”. He did further advise that the person who writes those reports does occasionally make typos, so for right now, this rumor remains unconfirmed.
UPDATE (7/12/13): As you can see by the new image added above, Steel Reserve 211 “Blk Berry” has been confirmed via an anonymous source who uploaded that image to my website a couple days ago! Since Sparks Blackberry is also 8.0% and also brewed by Steel Brewing, I have a feeling this “Alloy Series” may just be Sparks re-branded. If so, we may see Lemonade & Iced Tea in the Alloy Series as well. Or it’s possible they’ll both be on the market at the same time to determine which brand name the flavors sell better under. Time will tell, soon, either way!
